Welcome to Adventureland (2009)

Adventureland is the story of James Brennen (Jesse Eisenberg), a recent college graduate on his way to graduate school. Needing money, he takes a summer job at the local amusement park and that's when things get interesting.

 Adventureland movie review

Adventureland is Director Greg Mottola's follow up to Superbad. One of the problems with the perception of the film is with how it was marketed. Superbad was a very funny, gross out teen comedy. Many people expected this to be the same way. However, this is more of a light coming of age story. While there still are funny parts, it's more of a dramedy than comedy. If you know that going in, you might enjoy it more.

James meets an interesting collection of characters including the park managers (Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig), and fellow workers Em (Kristen Stewart), and Joel (Martin Starr).

James has his eye on Em and a budding romance develops. Throughout the summer, these characters learn about love, trust, friendship, and responsibility. These characters are real, interesting, and relatable. We feel their pain and wish them success. This is one of the reasons that the film works so well. It has heart and value. Adventureland is a sweet, honest, and realistic look at these college graduates as they try to find themselves during the summer of '87. One of the major highlights is the killer 80s soundtrack that really sets the mood for the film.

Adventureland is an overlooked gem. I prefer this to the more popular Superbad.Watching Adventureland always seems to put a smile on my face. That makes it a success in my book.
