The plot, which has been surrounded by secrecy, involves a young blade runner’s (Gosling) investigation into a burried secret that threatens world order.

Blade Runner 2049 works more as a detective mystery than you might expect from a “blockbuster” of this kind. At 2 hours and 45 mins, the pace is deliberate and allows the story to unfold peice by piece. It’s very story heavy but filled with precise detail. This is matched by the stunning visuals and incredible world building. Deakins is at the top of his game. Frankly, it’s one of the most beautful films in years.

Like the original, there’s far more than meets the eye. In a world filled with “artificial” replicants and holograms –the film tackles important questions. What does it mean to be human? Villeneuve explores the complexity of human identity and emotion. This adds incredible depth to an already detailed story.

“K” struggles with his identity desires as he slowly comes to grip with who he is and who he isn’t. Gosling handles this heartbreaking (and dangerous) journey to perfection.

Our life isn’t necessarily defined by the way we are born, but by the actions we take.

On the surface, it may seem like Hollywood trying to reboot a franchise 30 years later. But the film follows the path that the original film created. In this aspect, it’s one of the better sequels you’ll ever see.
Delivering on all fronts, Blade Runner 2049 is a marvel.
Jay (Maika Monroe) finds herself plagued
by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her.

Like most good horror films, It Follows works well as a social commentary. It's a rare horror film that has intriguing ideas to match its thrills. The entity, an obvious metaphor for an STD, haunts you until you pass it along to another person. Though, that's just a temporary fix because if the entity kills its the next victim, it eventually makes it way back down the line to previous victims. So there is a constant sense of dread that this one mistake will follow continue to follow you.

This entity doesn't have a defined appearance. It can look like anybody at anytime and its invisible to everyone else but the current victim. It's fitting that nobody else can see this entity, just as nobody else can relate to Jay's current trauma. It's personal to her.

She's haunted by this entity, not just because it keeps following her, but also because of moral struggle it creates. Should she pass it on and let somebody else worry about it? Should someone else have suffer because of her mistake?

This dilema forces Jay into a deeper despair as she struggles to come up with a solution.
It plays on similar fears teens face when growing up... dealing with an increased sense of responsibility and a certain loss of innocence (along with the obvious sexual fears).

Decisions made today, can impact the rest of your life. That, in and of itself, is a terrifying thought. With almost no adult characters in sight, these teens are forced to make all their decisions on their own and see how they play out (even if they don't always make the right decisions).

It Follows relies more on its eerie, creepy, suspenseful atmosphere than it does on typical horror tricks. While there are some genuine scares, there may not be enough to satisfy most horror fans today- and the film might be better for it. Modern horror films rely on too many cheap tricks and easy jump scares. Director David Robert Mitchell seems more concerned with creating a constant sense of tension and doom as the danger is always approaching. That horrifying atmosphere is much more difficult to create and feels more like a throwback to the horror films of the 1980s. Because of that, It Follows stands out among the horror films of today.

It Follows is a fascinating horror film with a lot on its mind. With enough thrills to satisfy, and a killer score to frighten, It Follows will stay with you long after you watch.

The brilliance in the story is that it was filmed over 12 years with the same cast. It's a groundbreaking coming of age story where we literally see these characters grow up before our eyes.

While some have accused the 12 year aspect as being a gimmick, it doesn't feel that way at all. It's just a device that helps tell the story in a unique way. It's something we've never seen before. This concept makes us feel like we are dropped in a time capsule and helps us experience the nostalgia of the past from different points in filming.

Subtle moments, from a young Samantha singing the Britney Spears classic "Oops I did it again" to Mason wearing as Spider-Man T-shirt, bring us back to the early 2000s, and make us realize and appreciate how much of a daunting task this film making process really was.

Being one of the most critically acclaimed films in a long, long time and the current frontrunner in the Best Picture race, Boyhood comes with massive expectations.

There's not many "big" moments. It focuses more on the mundane aspects of everyday life, but Linklater captures this slice of life perfectly. Our whole lives, we are conditioned to think that certain milestones in life are such a big deal, and when they happen, we think "that's it?" "Now what?"

Linklater doesn't exaggerate or dramatize these moments. He just paints them like they are.

If we wait for these "big" moments to define our lives, we might as well keep waiting. Life is about a collection of these little moments. If we don't take the time to appreciate them, life will pass us by and we'll end up missing out on what's really important.

Boyhood is a brilliant representation of life, parenting, and growing up that's emotionally resonant with a revolutionary technique. It's easy to nitpick something that's popular, so when a movie is this acclaimed, people might naturally be let down, but I really connected with it.

Boyhood deserves all the praise it has received. It's the best film of the year.
The fate of humanity on rests on this one mission.

As a space adventure, Interstellar succeeds, like most Nolan films, as
an edge of your seat thrill ride. Even at nearly 3 hours, there's never a
dull moment. Visually, the cinematography, production design, and
visual effects put Interstellar among the most beautiful space films
ever made. It's an all encompassing experience that hits its highs as good as any film this year.

Christopher Nolan's latest epic might just be his most emotional film yet. With deep characters and themes dealing with love and family, its his most relatable film. Unlike his previous works, we feel a real connection to the film as these characters carry the story.

At the center is Matthew McConaughey, who again proves he's on his way to becoming one of the best actors of this generation with another stellar performance. Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway also excel in what might be the best ensemble work in a Nolan film yet.

However, Interstellar might be too intellectual for its own good. In this day and age where sequels, remakes, and superhero films are taking over Hollywood, an original epic should be respected. I admire the ambition, but it packs in so many concepts and ideas to the point where it starts to feel bloated.

There's so much to take in that it might be hard to understand everything on a first viewing. This is especially the case because it relies so much on complicated scientific theories, including worm holes, black holes, and time travel within the space-time continuum.

The script has gotten a lot of criticism because it contains too much exposition. But when dealing with these complicated ideas that the average audience might not understand, exposition is necessary to get the point across.

Personally, I didn't have a problem with it, but I can understand if some might.

Still, this may be Nolan's weakest script to date. There's a few too many plot contrivances and cringe worthy lines of dialogue that prevent this from being among Nolan's best.

Nonetheless, Interstellar is still a fantastic achievement and a worthy addition to Nolan's increasingly impressive filmography.
The following is a review for Boardwalk Empire (2010-2015).

Set in the Prohibition era of the 1920s, Boardwalk Empire tells the story of Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, the treasurer of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Due to his relationships with mobsters as well as political contacts, the Federal Government starts to take an interest in him. The show focuses on the crime syndicates of Atlantic City, New York, and Chicago.

The show blends factual characters with fictional elements. Nucky Thompson is based on Nucky Johnson, the real life boss who controlled Atlantic City. Real characters include Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Arnold Rothstein, Johnny Torrio, and Meyer Lansky among others. In addition to the real characters, other fictional characters (or loose interpretations) are added to make the narrative work. This creates a fascinating criminal underworld dealing with bootlegging, corruption and murder. We really get to experience how ruthless these mobsters could be.

From a production standpoint, the show's beauty remains unmatched. From the sets, costumes, design, music, and atmosphere, it truly feels like we're experiencing life in the 1920s. The show genuinely feels like a work of art.

Boardwalk Empire premiered with massive expectations. After all, Terrance Winter created the show and Martin Scorsese served as executive producer (while also directing the pilot). Winter also was a writer and executive producer on The Sopranos. Many other writers and directors from The Sopranos joined Winter to work on Boardwalk Empire. So the comparisons to The Sopranos seem inevitable, albeit unfair (after all The Sopranos is widely regarded as the best television show of all-time).

With a reported budget of nearly 50 million for the first season
alone, the scale is massive as anything to ever appear on television.

While these expectations may have been impossible to match, Boardwalk Empire will always feel like a missed opportunity to me. With such a big scope, it sometimes feels like too much time is wasted on meaningless story lines for minor characters we don't really care about. The death of a certain character a few seasons in also dramatically changed the arc of several characters and significantly altered the show's structure.

Don't get me wrong, Boardwalk Empire still proved to be a great show. Through great storytelling, the show remained strong for the next few seasons. But I don't think it was ever able to reach the heights of the early seasons again (which were among the best on television). Consistency was a problem as a certain dynamic that made the show so successful was lost.

However, the biggest problem with Boardwalk Empire ended up being its premature cancellation. With a decline in ratings and budget concerns, HBO surprisingly announced that a shortened final season would be its last.

This final season will be most damaging to Boardwalk Empire's legacy. Based on how things ended in Season 4, it was clear they had no intentions of ending the show just yet (they were setting up new story lines instead of wrapping them up). Instead of the usual 12 episodes, the final season only featured 8.

Not only that, but the final season features a time jump of 7 years from where we left off. 7 years is a long time. It feels like we skipped 5 chapters are placed right at the end of the story. It just feels off.

The final season also features an ongoing flashback sequence that proves pointless and doesn't add anything to the story we didn't know already. We spent so much time we these characters, it's a shame we didn't get to experience their full journey.

The whole season feels rushed because they are trying to wrap everything up in a measly 8 episodes. With so many characters and story lines, it proves to be an impossibility. The signature tension and suspense the show usually displays isn't as prevalent because they didn't have the time to build the stories like the previous seasons.

Boardwalk Empire had so much potential. It's a shame HBO had to ruin it by canceling it too soon. Even though it was never able to live up to the impossible expectations, Boardwalk Empire was one of the better shows on television, providing great entertainment and insight into life in the 1920s.
Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick's portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

David Fincher, the master of this genre, delivers another gem. Gone Girl may very well be his most entertaining film. For a director who has given us such greats as Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, that's saying something. With wit and humor not typically displayed in his films, it adds another dimension to his signature style.

For an actor who has been so prominently portrayed in the media throughout his career, Ben Affleck proves to be perfect for the role of Nick Dunne. I admit, I had my doubts going in, but Fincher always seems to get the very best out of his actors, even when we do question them.

(Most notably Oscar nominated performances by Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network and Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

Affleck has the ability to maintain a certain level of innocence and likability yet he keeps us doubting him with each bad decision he continues to make. This complexity makes the film work so well since we ourselves start to question his true motives.

In a star making performance, Rosamund Pike delivers one of the darkest, most haunting performances in years, rivaling the likes of Natalie Portman in Black Swan and Kathy Bates in Misery. It's a performance that's sure to garner her some Oscar attention.

Throughout all the tension and suspense, Gone Girl also provides a dark
and depressing look at marriage.

Craziness aside, Nick and Amy suffer
from the same martial problems any of us might have. The film examines these issues of unfulfilled expectations as we see just how far someone might go when they are pushed the peak of desperation.

When things get tough, how much can two people really compromise to make things work? That's the essence of marriage, and essentially, that's the essence of this film.

Gone Girl is not your typical thriller. It's utterly complex in its storytelling as it presents itself as a classic mystery but hints at something deeper. Not only does it work as fascinating crime story, but it offers much more with its satirical take on the media, complex characters, and relevant themes.

Creepy, twisted, and completely fascinating, Gone Girl is one of the absolute
best films of the year, one that will keep you thinking far after the
credits roll.
