The following is a review for 500 Days of Summer (2009).
Everyone loves summer. It's a time for friends, family, and fun. Am I missing something? Oh yes, love. Summer is a
time for love.
The film can be pretty much summed up in one of the
first lines of the film. "This is a story of boy meets girl. But you
should know up front, this is not a love story." But is it? 500 Days of
Summer is not your typical romantic comedy. It's something much more than that.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are the leads, Tom
and Summer. These are real people. Tom, a believer in true
love and Summer, a doubter struggle to understand each other. Tom falls in love with Summer from the beginning. But she doesn't. She just wants to go with the flow. Tom deals with challenges every guy faces. This isn't a Hollywood romance. Everything about their relationship is genuine and unique, which makes it stand out among other romantic comedies.
Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel have great chemistry together and
give solid performances. They have a believable relationship and we understand their hardships. The film makes you notice the little things in relationships, the things most other films leave out.
The story goes back and forth highlighting different days during their relationship. Throughout this journey, we see all kinds of days... the good, the bad, the inbetween. Big props to
the editing department for highlighting this.
500 Days of Summer is really
refreshing now a days. It's funny, unique, and true to life. It's got
something everyone can like. The film shows the good and the bad of love,
relationships, and life.
In a genre that has become increasingly stale, 500 Days of Summer is a rare gem that stands out among the rest.
I liked it!!!
