Gone Girl (2014)

On the day of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports that his wife, Amy, has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick's portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

Gone Girl movie, Gone Girl review, Gone Girl Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike Gone Girl, David Fincher Gone Girl

David Fincher, the master of this genre, delivers another gem. Gone Girl may very well be his most entertaining film. For a director who has given us such greats as Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, that's saying something. With wit and humor not typically displayed in his films, it adds another dimension to his signature style.

Gone Girl 2014, Best Fincher movies, Gone Girl sceneFor an actor who has been so prominently portrayed in the media throughout his career, Ben Affleck proves to be perfect for the role of Nick Dunne. I admit, I had my doubts going in, but Fincher always seems to get the very best out of his actors, even when we do question them.

(Most notably Oscar nominated performances by Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network and Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

Affleck has the ability to maintain a certain level of innocence and likability yet he keeps us doubting him with each bad decision he continues to make. This complexity makes the film work so well since we ourselves start to question his true motives.

Gone Girl marriage, Gone Girl sceneIn a star making performance, Rosamund Pike delivers one of the darkest, most haunting performances in years, rivaling the likes of Natalie Portman in Black Swan and Kathy Bates in Misery. It's a performance that's sure to garner her some Oscar attention.

Throughout all the tension and suspense, Gone Girl also provides a dark and depressing look at marriage.

Gone Girl Fincher Affleck PikeCraziness aside, Nick and Amy suffer from the same martial problems any of us might have. The film examines these issues of unfulfilled expectations as we see just how far someone might go when they are pushed the peak of desperation.

When things get tough, how much can two people really compromise to make things work? That's the essence of marriage, and essentially, that's the essence of this film.

Gone Girl is not your typical thriller. It's utterly complex in its storytelling as it presents itself as a classic mystery but hints at something deeper. Not only does it work as fascinating crime story, but it offers much more with its satirical take on the media, complex characters, and relevant themes.

Creepy, twisted, and completely fascinating, Gone Girl is one of the absolute best films of the year, one that will keep you thinking far after the credits roll.

The Drop (2014)

The Drop highlights the criminal underworld of of Brooklyn, New York. Local gangster use covert schemes of funneling cash - "money drops" - in through seedy Brooklyn bars. After a robbery gone bad, local bartenders Bob (Tom Hardy) and Cousin Marv (James Galdolfini) find themselves entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood's past and tries to uncover the truth of what's really going on.

The Drop movie review, Tom Hardy The Drop, James Gandolfini The Drop

The Drop is a bit of a slow burner, focusing on these characters and their motivations first and foremost. Once again, Tom Hardy proves why he is considered one of the better up and coming actors of today. With a more subdued role, he shows he has the range to take on anything. He's quickly moving up my list of favorite actors. Sadly, this is the last time we'll get to see the great James Gandolfini act again. Like always, he owns the screen and delivers another intense performance.

Noomi Rapace The Drop Written by famed crime novelist Dennis Lehane, The Drop has many similarities to some of his previous work (Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River). He knows this genre well. Like many of his previous leads, Bob is another mysterious character living in a dark world.

Lehane shows he can handle a screenplay and I can't wait to see what else he has up his sleeve in the future.

One of the highlights of the film is the atmosphere a The entire film vibrates with tension and suspense as we get deeper and deeper into these characters. We feel their desperation and their fears with every beat.

photo the-drop-tom-hardy-james-gandolfiniThis is the type of film that is usually right up my alley.  While the atmosphere, mood, and direction are top notch, I felt the story was lacking. The plot and characters work great, but there could have been a little more build up and a little more detail.

Lehane adapted The Drop from his own short story "Animal Rescue." He took the premise and expanded it to a full feature length film. That may explain why some aspects of the story was lacking for me.

Still, The Drop is a fascinating character study centered around the world of the mob. The thin story is the only thing preventing it from being recognized as one of the best films of the year. Overall, it's still a great genre film.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Marvel's latest installment, Guardians of the Galaxy, gives us an expanded look into their superhero universe. With Guardians of the Galaxy, we get to see the stories of these lesser known heroes come to life.

Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax are the Guardians of the Galaxy, a team formed to protect to world (and galaxy) from all forms of evil. As a powerful orb gets in the wrong hands, they try to do just that, protect the galaxy.

photo guardians-of-the-galaxy-trailer-teaser-rocket_zps2aa2c3c7.jpg Guardians of the Galaxy was a big risk by Marvel. It features lesser known heroes and it's much more Sci-Fi based than it's previous films (Rocket is a talking raccoon while Groot is a talking tree than can only say 3 words).

The fact that it was able to cash in on a 90+ million dollar opening weekend -on par with Captain American 2- is a testament to the Marvel Brand (and marketing). It's a strong statement that we'll be seeing a lot more superheros in the future.
I admit, the superhero genre has become a bit over saturated lately, but Guardians feels different.

I am Groot, Guardians of the Galaxy GrootSure, at times it can fall into some of the typical superheroe cliches, but that's more of a fault with the genre than the film. Unlike most superhero films, it avoids the familiar origin stories of all these characters and gets the point much more quickly.

It also takes on a lighter tone with a more comedic approach and a killer soundtrack.

With tremendous charisma and screen presence, Chris Pratt (Quill) steals the show. Without him, I don't think the movie would have worked as well as it does. As more of a supporting player throughout his career, I hope this movie can finally put him on the map.

Guardians of the Galaxy works as a sci-fi adventure, a superhero film, and an underdog film. It's just a film about a band of misfits who come together for a greater good.

With  fresh characters and dazzling visuals, Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the better starts to a franchise in recent memory. It's a blast.
